The River Tees Gallery
The old Barforth Ferry was situated on the High Boat Pool. You can still see the steps today which led to the boathouse on Boat Lane,a lane leading south to Eppleby and Barforth deserted village.The ferry was owned by the Earl of Harewood and was a private ferry being used up to the 1920's. the public ferry was on the Low Boat Pool.

This is St. Mary's Church and the back of the houses on the area called the Coulton.You can see Watergate and the old ferry.This photograph was taken in 1893 probably by the Vicar Joseph Edleston from the old Yorkshire side of the river.Notice the high stone walls built to protect the gardens from the ravages of the Tees which at this time displayed a bore or wall of water which roared down the river when rainfalll was heavy upstream.This was caused by a rapid run-off along all the tributaries of the Tees.

This is a photograph taken of the old Boathouse which was sited on the Yorkshire side of the River Tees directly opposite the Gainford Wath or ford.It was a stone structure built at the bottom of Boat Lane and was still there up until the 1960's when Mrs Graham of Barforth Hall had it knocked down for it was in a derelict state.Local people who have lived here are the Hunts,Clements,

This is a view from Barforth Banks. It is from an etching drawn by the Gainford artist George Tennick who was a schoolmaster at Bowmans Academy or Gainford Academy.Today this is the Laurels Coffee Shop, the Theatre and the Village Hall complex. You can clearly see Gainford Hall,High Row,the Gasworks,the Manor House,Tees View,Gainford Station,St. Mary's
Church, Gainford School, the Congregational Church and Black Beck Bridge in the foreground, which runs into the River Tees just behind the island at High Boat Pool.
